Fluorine‐doped CdO thin films were deposited by spray pyrolysis from a solution of cadmium acetate in distilled water and methanol. The films were doped by addition of NH 4 F to the starting solution. The transmittance spectra corresponding to samples deposited with different concentrations of NH 4 F and different deposition temperatures were measured and the corresponding direct band‐gap energy values were calculated. A shift of the band gap edge depending on doping and substrate temperature was outlined. The observed behavior may be considered as a result of the simultaneous action of the so‐called Burstein‐Moss shift and the self‐energy effects due to electron–electron and electron–impurity scattering. The dependence of gap energy and valence and conduction band effective masses on the concentration of NH 4 F in the spraying solution and on the deposition temperature is reported.
