Abstract The behavior of the local electrostatic field produced by a charged point defect in an ionic crystal was studied by straightforward computation performed for a big cluster. It was shown that the size of the polarized region increases with the increase of the macroscopic dielectric constant. The results obtained are in agreement with an analytical study.
