Several conjugated polyazomethines have been synthesized by solution polycondensation of terephthaldehyde with benzidine, 3,3′‐dimethylbenzidine, 1,5‐diaminonaphthalene, 2,5‐dichloro‐1,4‐phenylenediamine, 4,4′‐thiodianiline and 4‐aminophenylsulfone. The polymers are characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy. In addition UV‐Vis spectra of polymer solutions in DMSO are studied and compared in some detail and X‐ray diffraction is used to show that the polymers are crystalline. The different conformers are also reported. DC electrical conductivity of compacts is carried out in the temperature range 300–600 K. An attempt is made to relate the DC electrical conductivity behavior to time of reaction, crystallinity and molecular energy band structure.
