Solid state topochemical photopolymerization of amphiphilic diynes modified at hydrophobic part of molecule was under the study. All compounds formed stable monomer monolayers on an aqueous subphase surface and were transferred as multilayers onto quartz substrates by the Langmuir‐Blodgett technique. The changes of the multilayer absorption spectra as a function of UV irradiation time have been investigated. It is shown that the insertion of an ester or sulfonyl group into the hydrophobic part of the diyne molecule increased their activity in topochemical photopolymerization reaction. The polymer absorbancies decreased under excess UV irradiation due to the decomposition of polydiacetylenic chains in the multilayer structure.
