With the use of molecular modeling, we have demonstrated that solubility parameters obtained from current experimental methods correspond to a hypothetical vaporization process of which the conformational change of macromolecules in the vapor state is ignored. Since the energy associated with such a process is relatively large, its impact on the resultant δ cannot be neglected. This is especially important for polymers that shrink considerably in the vapor state.
