DNA is considered as a nonlinear dynamical system where internal motions of large amplitudes are possible. A short description of the history, results and perspectives of mathematical modeling one of the internal motions named local unwinding of the double helix, are discussed. A new mathematical model of the process of local unwinding, which consists of four nonlinear differential equations, is presented.
