Polyhedral expansion of stable 12‐vertex closo‐ ruthenacarborane [(η‐C 5 Me 5 )Ru(C 2 B 9 H 11 )] − by direct insertion of [(η‐C 5 R 5 )Ru] + fragments takes place under very mild conditions (−78 °C). The resulting 13‐vertex diruthenacarboranes (see picture) are very stable although they have two electrons less than required by Wade's rules.
