The highly thermodynamically favorable oxidation of phosphite to phosphate by phosphite dehydrogenase (PtxD) makes the enzyme useful for cofactor regeneration (see figure). Deuterium exchange in D 2 O provides labeled phosphite for the preparation of deuterated products.
