Short bonds explained at long last : The charge‐density distribution in the SN bonds of H 2 C{S(N t Bu) 2 (NH t Bu)} 2 , the NR analogue of methane disulfonic acid H 2 C{S(O) 2 (OH)} 2 , was studied by high‐resolution X‐ray diffraction and subsequent multipole structure refinement (see picture). This experiment reveals that all three nitrogen atoms at each sulfur atom are sp 3 hybridized. The formal SN double bonds are shortened by electrostatic reinforcement and not by p π –d π interaction.
