Initiated by metal ions : Intramolecular electron transfer in a donor–acceptor linked system (a ferrocene–naphthoquinone dyad Fc–NQ; see scheme) can be started thermally by adding an appropriate metal ion (Sc 3+ ) which can promote thermal electron transfer, which would otherwise be unlikely to occur, to give a radical ion complex (Fc + –NQ .− /Sc 3+ ).
