Visible light can greatly enhance the oxidative degradation of organic compounds such as rhodamine B and salicylic acid, which are test compounds for organic pollutants. The degradations are significantly accelerated relative to reactions carried out in the dark. The mechanism involves the photoassisted generation of HO . radicals, which react with the pollutants to form the degraded products.
