Oxidation of elemental sulfur (S 8 ) with dimethyldioxirane (or CF 3 CO 3 H) generates a disulfur monoxide equivalent (“S 2 O”). Yields of “S 2 O” of 30–40 % are obtained from equimolar amounts of S 8 and an oxidizing agent. “S 2 O” reacts with diazoalkanes to give dithiirane 1‐oxides [Eq. (1)].
