Per‐O‐benzylation of [ closo ‐B 12 (OH) 12 ] 2− ( 1 2− ) using benzyl chloride followed by oxidation with two equivalents of Fe III gave compound 2 , the per(benzyloxy) derivative of hypercloso ‐B 12 H 12 (see scheme). Species 2 is characterized by 11 B NMR and electronic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and X‐ray crystallography.
