Increase, don't decrease, the noise level! The experiments described show that, contrary to intuition, statistical noise can have an enhancing effect on a weak periodic signal. This phenomenon, known as stochastic resonance, is shown in the bistable oxidation of an organic substrate by air oxygen catalyzed by copper (ii) ions.
