The first oxidation product of Cl 2 is not Cl 2 + but Cl 4 + , which can be isolated below −78°C as blue Cl 4 + IrF 6 − in the reaction between Cl 2 and IrF 6 . The cation has a rectangular structure (see picture) and reacts with O 2 to give Cl 2 O 2 + .
