The square hole for the round peg: The first two members of a new family of tetrametallic cyclophanes ( 1 ; M=Mn I , Re I ), which feature rectangular cavities, have been synthesized and characterized. Both of the luminescent compounds behave as mesoporous materials in a thin film and display high capacities and substantial affinities towards the uptake of selected volatile organic compounds.
