The trigonal prism is rare in chemistry , and it has now been established as a new geometry for cage compounds. In the title compound, a cyanometalate cage obtained from the reaction of [Mo(CO) 3 (MeCN) 3 ] with 1.5 equivalents of CN − in the presence of K + , the formally 18‐coordinate K + ion lies at the center of the prism (shown schematically). Thus, classical metal–carbonyl complexes are promising precursors to cyanometalate cages.
