The cover picture shows a fluorescence chemosensor which can selectively detect the presence of organic substrates in water. The sensor, a Zn II complex of a triaminocyclohexane derivative bearing an anthracenyl group (top left), forms a ternary complex (bottom right) with Vitamin B13 (orotic acid, middle) with a formation constant higher than 10 6 (water is depicted as red and white space‐filling models). Within the ternary complex, the interaction between the anthracenyl moiety and the substrate cause the quenching of the anthracene fluorescence emission. Vitamin B13 concentration in the sub‐micromolar range can be detected without interference by other species of biological relevance. Other inorganic and organic substrates can be detected by the same sensor system. This work is described in more detail by Fabbrizzi, Mancin, and Tecilla on p. 94 ff.
