The cover picture shows all the pieces of the puzzle that eventually led to the structural elucidation of himastatin, a new antibiotically active drug candidate isolated from an indigenious Actinomycete strain found in the Himachal Pradesh State in India. The total synthesis of himastatin—and how the summit was reached is described by Danishefsky et al. on p. 41 ff.—was necessitated by the fact that the orginally fully synthetic material did not match the naturally occurring himastatin, so that the assigned structure had to be revised. The background picture shows part of the Himalayan mountain range namely, the Nuptse (second missing piece from the left), Mount Everest (middle), Lohtse (to its right), and Makalu (smaller peak to the right), and was kindly provided by Professor H. Kessler, Garching, Germany.
