Abstract The kinetics of the oxidation of dimethylsulfoxide by Cerium(IV) in perchloric acid has been investigated spectrophotometrically. The water role has been elucidates by using acidity criteria. A tentative mechanism consistent with the kinetics is discussed, the rate‐determining step being a bimolecular process between ions of positive charge.
