Self—assembly of Zinc(II) ions with suberic acid and 1, 10‐phenanthroline in CH 3 OH/H 2 O resulted in five new complexes [Zn(phen) 3 ]L · 14H 2 O ( 1 ), [Zn 2 (phen) 2 (H 2 O) 2 L 2 ] · 5H 2 O ( 2 ), Zn(phen)(HL) 2 ( 3 ), [Zn(phen) 2 (HL)]NO 3 · H 2 O ( 4 ) and [Zn(phen) 3 ] 2 (L)(NO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 20 ( 5 ), which are characterized by X—ray diffraction (H 2 L = HOOC—(CH 2 ) 6 —COOH). The suberate salts 1 and 5 are featured by hydrogen bonded 3D networks. Such 3D networks are built up by crystal water molecules and suberate anions in 1 or by crystal water molecules, suberate anions and nitrate anions in 5 , and the tris—chelated [Zn(phen) 3 ] 2+ complex cations in the tunnels are assembled via π—π stacking interactions into 1D chains. The suberato compound 2 consists of the crystal water molecules and the centrosymmetric dinuclear [Zn 2 (phen) 2 — (H 2 O) 2 L 2 ] complex molecules, which are assembled, via hydrogen bonding and π—π stacking interactions, to form a 3D open framework, and the crystal water molecules are located in the tunnels. The hydrogensuberato compound 3 crystallizes in the acentric monoclinic space group C 2 and is made of [Zn(phen)(HL) 2 ] complex molecules, which are interlinked by hydrogen bonds, but not by π—π stacking interactions, to a polar 3D network. In the hydrogensuberato compound 4 , assembly of the [Zn(phen) 2 (HL)] + complex cations via π—π stacking interactions forms 1D chains, which are further connected by nitrate anions and crystal water molecules to 2D layers.
