Cesium azide can conveniently be prepared from anhydrous CsF and (CH 3 ) 3 SiN 3 in SO 2 solvent in high purity and yield. In this reaction, the initially generated SO 2 F — anion is converted in SO 2 solvent to solvated azide, (SO 2 ) n N 3 — , which is labile and releases SO 2 under dynamic vacuum yielding pure CsN 3 .
