Oxidation of [Yb(OAr R ) 2 (THF) 3 ] (OAr R = OC 6 H 2 –2,6‐ t Bu 2 ‐4‐R; R = H, Me, t Bu) with HgX 2 or with (CH 2 X) 2 (X = Cl, Br, I) in THF yields [Yb(OAr R ) 2 X(THF) 2 ], whilst [Yb(OAr Me ) 2 Cl(THF) 2 ] was also obtained by oxidation of the appropriate Yb(II) aryloxide with C 2 Cl 6 in THF. An X‐ray crystal structure determination has shown [Yb(OAr Me ) 2 I(THF) 2 ] to be a five coordinate monomer, in which ytterbium has distorted square pyramidal stereochemistry with mutually trans OAr Me and THF ligands in the square plane and an apical iodide. Attempts to grow single crystals of [Yb(OAr H ) 2 Cl(THF) 2 ] yielded [Yb(OAr H ) 2 OH(THF)] 2 , shown to be an hydroxo‐bridged dimer with five‐coordinate ytterbium by X‐ray crystallography.
