The Coopersmith Self‐Esteem Inventory (SEI) Form B was administered to 450 elementary children identified as gifted, normal, and mild mentally handicapped (MiMH). The teachers also rated the children's levels of self‐esteem, using the Self‐Esteem Rating Scale for Children (SERSC). The results showed that, on the SEI Form B, both the gifted and normal children had significantly higher self‐esteem than did the MiMH children, but there were no differences between the gifted and normal children. On the SERSC, teacher ratings of self‐esteem were significantly higher for the gifted than for the normal and the MiMH children, and significantly higher for the normal than for the MiMH children.
