An introductory science program based on the principles of the psychology of self‐management was taught by an 8th‐grade science instructor and evaluated using a variation on multiple baseline procedures. One‐hundred‐twenty eighth graders were assigned to pilot experimental and control groups. The results suggested that self‐management instruction was associated with significantly greater understanding of self‐management and behavioral principles, as well as basic science processes. In contrast to the current literature, it was also found that female studens achieved equally well as males in understanding basic science processes after participating in the self‐management course.
