An examination of a variety of approaches to the design of an assessment procedure for the child with cerebral palsy is presented. Both statutory and clinical arguments for a comprehensive assessment are offered. A summary and description of the nature of cerebral palsy and its concomitants are included in order to offer a prototypical multihandicapped population for analysis. The concept of an open‐ended grid that cross‐references basic psychological processes with expressive modality is put forth as a means of systematizing the individual evaluation.
