Relations between philosophy and psychology before APA Division 24 on Philosophical Psychology was founded in 1962 are reviewed. A history of events leading up to the formation of this division is presented by the division's first president‐elect. The major issues were the role of philosophy in scientific psychology, teleology, dualism, and freedom versus determinism.
