First‐year graduate students enrolled in a required graduate course in the history of psychology were tested for their familiarity with seventy‐six eminent contributors to psychology and thirteen research and library sources. The data indicate that the students were poorly informed about names in the history of psychology and basic historical resource tools. Students who had previously completed an undergraduate course in the history of psychology fared better than those who had no such course. Nevertheless, the undergraduate course alone may not be sufficient to ensure the development of basic historical literacy.
