Community psychology and public health should be natural allies, yet the two fields operate sufficiently independently of each other to undermine their capacity to reach what might be common objectives. This discontinuity is in part a reflection of differential priority attached to explaining health outcomes and identifying individuals' health status by the two fields. To foster crossdisciplinary work here we highlight the distinction between explanation of health outcomes and identification of individuals' health status. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
