This article reviews basic approaches to the scientific evaluation of outcome in psychotherapy and preventive intervention research and examines their applicability to HIV‐outcome research. Specific consideration is given to the reciprocal expectations of the service provider and client concerning seropositivity and their impact on the course and outcome of the intervention. Ten basic principles for maximizing the measurement of effectiveness are presented and reviewed.
