Research that has examined factors presumed to cause suicide is reviewed. The roles of physical illness, loss and isolation, sex role differences, economic conditions, attitudes, depression and hopelessness, and life satisfaction are considered. The relevance of these factors to a person‐environment interaction perspective is discussed. Baechlor has suggested that suicide is always a solution to a problem and the implications of this fomulation for prevention are discussed. Educational, nontraditional, and policy implications are emphasized.
