A two‐phase program was developed to foster a more efficient community response to the problem of spouse abuse. The first phase described resulted in a booklet to assist human services workers in providing pertinent information to victims of spouse abuse. The second phase consisted of separate training programs for four occupational categories: police officers, attorneys and legislators, counselors and clergy, and medical personnel. The need for, and effectiveness of, such training in each occupational group is reviewed. Recommendations for setting up comparable programs are provided.
