The role of the human development liaison specialist and its potential for becoming an independent profession are discussed under the seven characteristics of a process model of professions (Buchar & Strauss, 1960–1961): sense of mission, work activities, methodology and techniques, clients, colleagueship, interests and associations, and relations to the public. The results of a Delphi study are presented as a means of exploring potential liaison jobs, and specific reasons for and obstacles to liaison as a professional role.
