A group of primarily Mexican‐American, teenage parents were interviewed and compared with never‐pregnant teenage groups from a local high school and from a mental health clinic. The purpose of the interview was to identify characteristics special to the teen parents and to determine if they appeared to be at higher risk for parenting problems than the comparison groups. The teen parents and clinic groups were similar and different from the high school group in having more single parent families and more relationship problems with parents. The teen parent group differed from the other groups in having more members who were isolated and who had less interest in work or school. All three groups scored high on a measure to determine parenting problems, Michigan Screening Profile of Parenting, with the teen parent and clinic groups having a tendency to score higher than the high school group.
