The Rotter Locus of Control Scale was used to assess personality differences of 78 heads of households of similar (upper‐lower) socioeconomic level residing in three sections of one community in the Southeast. The participants were divided into two groups: residents who were undergoing foreclosures on their home mortgages, and a nonforeclosure group experiencing no major financial difficulty. Results indicate that heads of households experiencing foreclosure were significantly more external than controls.
