One of the important group process phenomena present in group mental health consultation is the construction of metaphors by group members. This paper reviews the concept of the metaphor, and lists a set of cues to help the consultant identify the existence of a metaphor. In addition, the authors discuss the various functions the metaphor can play in group and individual unconscious and preconscious thinking. Finally, four general strategies for responding to a metaphor are outlined and evaluated. Examples from group mental health consulatation to preservice teachers are provided.
