Systematic evaluation of mental health consultation is an essential component of mental health program development. The Public School Consultation and Education team of a community mental health center developed a mail‐out questionnaire composed of both objective and open‐ended items. The questionnaire was used to evaluate the team's performance at the termination of each school consultation. Results indicated that about 75% of the consultees had incorrect expectations of what mental health consultation entailed. Positive evaluations seemed to be related to the consultants' speed, competence, interpersonal skills, and understanding of the consultees' problems. Negative criticism seemed to result from misunderstanding of the services offered.
