Adolescent girls in a residential treatment center served as counselors in a day camp program for preschool children who had severe problems in social, cognitive, and motor development. The camp program served both populations. As expected, the adolescents required considerable adult staff supervision and support to help them master a variety of psychosocial issues and to function as effective counselors. What was less expected was the degree of ongoing enthusiasm and great sense of achievement that was generated in most of the adolescents, as well as the effectiveness with which these troubled youngsters could help meet the emotional and educational needs of much younger children with special problems.
