The historical development of research on production and operations management was traced from its roots in firm cost and efficiency studies through systems analysis research. This research made an important contribution to improved performance of firms. Reasons for the sharp decline of research in this area were examined. One reason relates to the fact that research problems had less direct relevance to the firm. Information needs of firms and others were examined. This provided the basis for identifying needed research. While a number of research problem areas were described, two were discussed in depth: comparative performance information and expert systems.
