An unconventional method , based on the spectrophotometric measurements of solution absorbance during hydration of aldehydes into diols, was applied for the determination of water activity in aqueous electrolyte solutions. The obtained values of the activity coefficient f W as a function of electrolyte concentration were used to estimate water structure ordering around ions. This method does not suffer from the weaknesses of X‐ray diffraction and neutron scattering techniques applied in complementary studies.
