Nature can do Diels–Alder reactions too! Enzymatic catalysis of this type of reaction is found to play a key role in the formation of secondary metabolites, like the decalin precursor of lovastatin (see scheme). Insight into the detailed mechanism of protein catalysis was obtained by structural investigation of catalytic antibodies with Diels–Alderase activity.
