Molecular engineering of the external surface of liposomes with recognizable moieties (symbolized by the green and red shapes in the picture) leads to the formation of biomaterials that have, in certain cases, multicompartmental properties. Analogous strategies were followed for liposome–cell and cell–cell interactions. Recent advances in this field, which has the formation of tissue‐like structures as its ultimate goal, are summarized.
