Mini magic: Minigramicidins consisting of 11 or 22 amino acids have been synthesized and functionally characterized as potent ion‐channel formers. Their properties are remarkably affected by membrane thickness; hydrophobic mismatch renders them virtually inactive in thick lipid bilayers whereas in thinner membranes the channel‐active dimer can be formed (see picture).
