The major obstacle in the potential medicinal use of discodermolide (1) —its insufficient supply from natural sources—might be eliminated by the recently accomplished total syntheses of this antitumour agent. In contrast to paclitaxel, discodermolide is active even against multidrug‐resistant cells; it also has a significantly higher affinity to the tubulin‐binding site.
