A new chiral polymer–metal complex, methylsulfo–methyl–cellulose‐Pd complex (MS‐MC‐Pd) was prepared by the reaction of methylcellulose with methylsulfonyl chloride, followed by reaction with palladium chloride. The complex obtained was found to catalyze the asymmetric hydrogenation of o‐cresol to give (S)‐2‐methyl‐cyclohexanone in more than 90% product and optical yields at 25 °C and under 1 atm H 2 . The product and optical yields were greatly affected by Pd loading in the complex, solvent quality and reaction temperature. The catalyst could be reused several times without any remarkable loss in optical catalytic activity. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
