In this paper, the generalized theory for perfectly matched layers, originally presented as a systematic development of the unsplit‐field formulation of perfectly matched absorbers in cartesian co‐ordinates, is extended to curvilinear co‐ordinates. A special class of unstructured grids is identified, which is of interest to many practical applications, and for which the construction of perfectly matched layers is possible. The interesting case of cylindrical co‐ordinates is examined separately, and several differences are identified between the way that the perfectly matched layers are constructed in this case and in the case of Cartesian co‐ordinates. Numerical results from transient electromagnetic simulations on unstructured grids are used to investigate the absorbing effectiveness of the constructed perfectly matched absorbers.
