The origins, reasons for and methods of cell delineation in ATM together with the choice of polynomial used for header error checking of cells are explored. The hardware configuration is examined to determine whether there is a polynomial that fulfils all the requirements for the choice of polynomial but which could result in easier implementation. A polynomial is suggested for future consideration. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
