Abstract The volatile constituents of the above‐ground (aerial) parts of Cerastium candidissimum Correns (Caryophyllaceae) were extracted by steam distillation and analysed by gas chromatography–electron impact mass spectroscopy (GC– ei MS). The dominating substances were represented by hydrocarbons and their derivatives (46.4%), compounds with 13 carbons (14.2%) and sesquiterpenoids (9.6%). Nonanal (13.7%), trans ‐β‐ionone (13.4%), 6,10,14‐trimethyl‐2‐pentadecanone (10.4%), and ( E )‐β‐farnesene (5.3%) were the main compounds identified. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
