In the literature on spatial point patterns, the distribution of Eberhardt's index is obtained empirically. In this paper, using multivariate central limit theorem, the asymptotic distribution of Eberhardt's statistic is obtained in three spatial patterns viz., random, aggregated and regular. Based on these, tests of randomness are developed for detecting the type of spatial pattern. Powers of these tests under both aggregated and regular alternatives are evaluated. The tests are powerful under various degrees of aggregation and regularity. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
