Abstract Starting from acetic acid and methyl iodide an efficient modular synthetic scheme has been developed for the synthesis of 13 C‐labeled 2,7‐dimethylocta‐2,4,6‐triene‐1,8‐dial, which is a suitable building block in the synthesis of carotenoids with tenfold 13 C‐enrichment in the central part.
